TRAI to whip GSM companies for not connecting to Reliance

Telecom regulator TRAI has issued two directives to GSM players asking them to sort out connectivity issues with Reliance Communication’s GSM network by August 21. The regulator will write to the Department of Communication to take strict actions against such companies if the fail to comply by its directive in the given time. GSM operators have been saying that Reliance can not use the CDMA interconnect agreement for GSM services. These companies want the company to enter in to a separate GSM connectivity agreement for its services.

BHEL to invest Rs 10,000 crore in next four years

Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has drawn up an investment plan for over Rs 10,000 crore for the next four years in order to meet the growing electricity needs. In the first phase, the company plans to invest Rs 5,000 crore till December 2009 to increase its current capacity to 15,000 MW, followed by a similar investment to take the capacity to 20,000 MW by 2012.
Firstsource to provide KPO service to British Telecom

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Firstsource Solutions — Pipal Research — has won a three-year outsourcing contract from global leader British Telecom Global Services (BTGS) for Rs 63 crore. The deal could be extended to another six years, raising the value of the contract to Rs 126 crore, depending on Pipal’s performance.
Domestic airlines witness fall in passenger traffic in July

The domestic airline industry has witnessed a fall in the passenger traffic in July 2008, the second month in a row. As per the data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the ten top domestic airlines ferried 30.85 lakh passengers last month compared to 34.87 lakh passengers in July 2007, a decline of around 12%.
Softening crude to help OMCs cut losses

Softening of crude prices in the last couple of weeks will help government-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) to cut down on the huge losses these companies have been incurring. Before the government hiked the petro product prices, the aggregate under-recoveries of OMCs were estimated at Rs 2,45,000 crore for the current fiscal. The estimate came down to Rs 2,05,000 crore after the government increased petro prices by 11% in first week of June.
