The finance ministry is unlikely to impose the commodities transaction tax (CTT) in the current fiscal year to March 31. The CTT is unlikely to be notified in this fiscal year. The finance ministry is of the view that proposed CTT rates maybe on the higher side.

The government and the pharmaceutical industry are in talks to introduce quality mark for medicines to ensure consumers do not buy sub-standard drugs. It is learnt that suggestions to this effect were made in a recent meeting of the department of pharmaceutical and the industry. As the department plans to open drug stores which would sell only generic medicines, the latest initiative would help it to ensure only quality medicines are sold through the proposed network.
