Glenmark’s molecule for diabetes completes phase IIb trials

Pharmaceutical major Glenmark’s novel molecule — Melogliptin — has successfully completed 12 week phase IIb clinical trials in 494 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The molecules will now enter global phase III trials by the end of 2009.
The company’s investigational medicine from the new class of diabetes treatment called dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and exhibited excellent safety and tolerable profile. Further, with an intake of this medicine, patients are experiencing low incidence of hypoglycemia and netural effect on body weight.
With the drug completing phase II clinical trials, the company is coming close becoming the first Indian company to have developed a truly global innovative drug for the world.
